READ: How former V.P Atiku, made former president Obasanjo, a billionaire after he left prison.

The misunderstanding  between former President Obasanjo and his Vice President and current presidential aspirant of the PDP, Atiku had its root long before the retired Army General was voted into office in 1999.

Though their encounter began on a more friendly and mutually beneficial manner before it deteriorated in 2007 when Atiku torpedoed Obasanjo’s third term ambition and the General in turn making sure Atiku did not succeed him in office.

In a recently published book titled “Love does not win elections” by Chidi Odinkalu, the  former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and Ayisha Osori, it was revealed that Obasanjo did not think himself able to contest for the presidential election and assume office in 1999 because he was near financial ruins.

Obasanjo who had just been released from prison after he was accused of plotting to overthrow late dictator, General Sani Abacha, was near bankruptcy and not in any financial state to contest for the highest office in the land.

After paying a visit to the General at his Ota home, Atiku resolved to save Obasanjo from his financial difficulties by transferring a large sum of money to his account. Atiku further made all his resources available to the future president and he subsequently joined Obasanjo’s ticket as Vice President.

Atiku later tried to succeed Obasanjo as president in 2003 but the former president held on for a second term in office with Atiku remaining as Vice President, but things began to take a turn for the worse when the third term ambition of the Ogun State born politician began to surface and Atiku’s well publicised effort to thwart it.

Over the years, Obasanjo had stoutly stood against Atiku’s ambition to bag the top job in politics and he has recently stated that he would not support his former Vice President aim to take the reigns at Aso rock, Abuja.
