READ: Top 5 poorest countries in Africa

Sometimes, we think our country is bad, but then things like this list of the poorest countries in the world sort of put things in perspective, don’t they?

The sad part is that most of the top poorest countries in the world are in Africa. *sigh* The International Monetary Fund defines which countries get on the floor by listing them according to purchasing power per capita.

1. South Sudan
South Sudan is one of the poorest countries with one of the weakest economies in the world. The country has minimal infrastructure and as at 2011, it reportedly had the highest maternal mortality and female illiteracy rates in the world.

2. Burundi
Burundi’s current state is possibly the aftershocks of its ethnic based civil war. It is a small, landlocked country with an underdeveloped economy. Apparently, most of the population relies on subsistence farming to survive. The poverty rate in Burundi is high, education rate is low, and  1 in 15 adults have HIV.

3. Malawi

With bad governance and a HIV pandemic, Malawi is reduced to where it sits now – the third on the world bank’s list of  poorest countries.

4. Central African Republic
The Central African Republic is one of the poorest countries in the world, the country lacks basic infrastructure, with only 476km of the roads in the country are paved. It has no railroad, limited international air service, and no international air service.

5.  Niger
Niger Republic is a landlocked country with a large portion of its land being covered by the Sahara Desert. Poverty is very rampant in Niger, as its citizens battle hunger and access to water everyday.
We do hope that things get better for Africa soon. Which of these countries have you visited before now?
