Shiites protests: 130 convicted Shiites, gets bail.

No fewer than 130 member of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) were on Thursday arraigned by the Nigeria Police FCT Command before the Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) brought before the court, the defendants were charged with “joint act, continuing in unlawful assembly knowing it has been commanded to disperse, disturbance of public peace, rioting and causing hurt.”

The offences contravene sections 79, 104, 113, 106, and 242 of the Penal Code. The defendants, who included 12 women and nursing mothers, all pleaded not guilty to the allegation.

The defendants were divided and arraigned simultaneously in five different court rooms.

In the case of Malik Musa and 29 others, the panelists Elizabeth Jones and Ahmed Ilela heard the charges and granted bail to the defendants following a plea by defence lawyer, Adam Ishaq.

Ishaq informed the court that most of the defendants are students of tertiary institutions, adding that they are still carrying bodily injuries following the clash with security agencies.

The prosecution counsel, Fidelis Ogbobe did not object to the bail application but asked the court to exercise its discretion to ensure the appearance of the defendants to face trial.

Some of the defendants were granted bail in the sums of N50, 000; N200, 000; and N500, 000 each.

The trial in the cases will commence on November 8.
