UN, EU donates amenities and water projects to communities in Akwa Ibom

The United Nations Children’s Fund and the European Union have, in partnership with the Akwa Ibom State Government, donated 46 solar powered mini water projects and 32 sanitation facilities to two  communities in the state.

Speaking yesterday in Eket Local Government Area at a meeting on the establishment of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) media network on Niger Delta Support Project, Mr Idongesit Ido, Acting General Manager of Akwa Ibom Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, said the facilities had given women and children access to improved water and sanitation services.

He said out of the 52 solar powered mini water projects awarded, 46 had been completed.

He said the programme, as a pilot scheme, started in the local government areas of Obot Akara and Nsit Atai, adding that there were plans to extend it to Ikono and Esit Eket Local Government Areas. documents to the State House of Assembly to enact into law for easy implementation of the policy.

He commended the UNICEF, the EU and the state government for the gesture, “With the help of relevant stakeholders, we have made remarkable milestones in water schemes, provision of sanitation facilities, baseline surveys, anti-open defecation awareness campaigns and sundry WASH programmes.
